Prior to the release of The Last Jedi, Disney/Lucasfilm had announced that Rian Johnson is also set to make a brand new Star Wars trilogy. However, the polarizing nature of The Last Jedi and a rabid backlash by a vocal minority has repeatedly made the Star Wars fandom wonder and speculate if his trilogy was still in the works. Well, it looks like we once again have confirmation from the man himself. During his Knives Out presentation at CinemaCon, Johnson mentioned that he was “going back to a galaxy far, far way” after this film (which hits the big screen this November 27). This news is courtesy of Collider’s Steve Weintraub who was in the crowd during the presentation.

— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) April 4, 2019 Lucasfilm has a bunch of projects currently in active development/production. Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian will reportedly be released with the launch of Disney+, at the end of the year, while the currently untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is set to hit the big screens this December. On top of that, the creators of the Game of Thrones TV series are also working on their trilogy which is rumoured to take place during the Old Republic.

While I eagerly anticipate all of these, it’s Johnson’s trilogy that intrigues me the most. With The Last Jedi, Johnson took the Star Wars franchise, placed it on a table and deconstructed it. He explored characters and their flaws in a manner that was never done before in Star Wars. He left out epic lightsaber on lightsaber duels for a deep dive into the philosophy of the Force and the Jedi teachings. I can’t wait to see what else he has up his sleeve!
