The Verge reports that the beta software for the PS5 has become available to select users in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France and Japan. As when SIE first announced the specs of the console, you’ll need an PCIe 4 M.2 SSD that’s at least as fast as its custom hardware, which reads at 5.5GB/s.
That being said, SIE says that it “cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console”. The company also says that, even if it has the same speed, the company cannot guarantee that it will work as well as the internal drive of the PS5. SIE also says that you’ll need to make sure the SSD you use has its own “effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink”. Overall, things can get a little dicey when it comes to picking an SSD for the PS5, even if there are already some like the WD SN850 that seem to fit perfectly. Other things added by the new PS5 beta software include the capability of 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers.
